Welch Allyn was started in 1915 by Dr Francis Welch and Inventor William Allyn and they developed the first hand-held, direct illuminating ophthalmoscope. Welch Allyn also makes, stethoscopes, otoscopes, sphygmomanometers (blood pressure monitors), ECGs and other patient monitoring devices.
Hillrom also was founded in 1915 as part of Hillenbrand Industries and is known for its quality hospital beds and medical devices. Top products included Nurse Call Hospital Alert, HPL Staff and Asset Tracking and Centrella Hospital beds (winning the 2017 Stanley Caplan User Centered Design Award). More modern beds from Hillrom use built-in sensors to check patients’ vitals hundreds of times per minute.
Hillrom acquired Welch Allyn in 2015, then Baxter acquired Hillrom in 2021 to create a ‘Global Medtech Leader’. Their goal is to transform healthcare and help advance it from the hospital to the home, utilize innovation to drive efficiencies and enable broader access to healthcare worldwide.
